Beaches in Calabria

Calabria has a long coast and no single ranking of its beaches. This page uses the 2026 Blue Flag list as a base and explains what the award tells you and what it leaves open.

How the 12 beaches were chosen

The Blue Flag list for 2026 names beach sections along the whole Calabrian coast. This page picks 12 of them, in 11 municipalities, and adds the sandy bays of Capo Vaticano that sit outside the list. The selection is editorial. The numbers keep the list tidy and are not a ranking.

One point causes confusion: Calabria has 27 Blue Flag municipalities in 2026, not 27 beaches. The flag is awarded to named sections of a coast, so a flagged town can still have unflagged stretches next to it. Four municipalities are new this year: Amendolara, Montegiordano, Locri and Falerna.

12 beaches and coastal sections

All 12 appear in the 2026 Blue Flag list. The list gives names and municipalities. Fees, lifeguard hours and facilities are not part of it, so check the signs on arrival.

1. Marina dell'Isola, Tropea

Tropea has three listed sections in 2026: Marina dell'Isola, Marina del Convento and Rocca Nettuno. The sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola stands on its rock above the beach of Tropea. The Tropea page covers the sanctuary and the town.

2. Marina del Convento, Tropea

The second Tropea section in this list. Tropea's beaches lie under the cliffs and red roofs of the old town, In summer 2026 the municipal Bus per il Mare stopped at the harbor, Le Roccette and Madonna dell'Isola. Check whether it runs on your dates.

3. Michelino, Parghelia

Listed under the municipality of Parghelia. If you stay in Tropea, work out how you will get there before you plan a beach day around it, because transport options differ by place and season.

4. Arcomagno and Canale Grande Marinella, San Nicola Arcella

The list gives two names for this entry, so expect to see both on local signs. It is the only listing for San Nicola Arcella.

5. Camping Internazionale and Punta Fiuzzi, Praia a Mare

The section carries the name of a campsite and a headland. Praia a Mare is also the town of the Isola di Dino and of the cave sanctuary of Santa Maria della Grotta.

6. Cirella, within Diamante Nord, Diamante

Cirella is a named part of the northern Diamante stretch. Look for it by that name, not just as Diamante.

7. Giovino, Catanzaro

The only section on this page that belongs to the city of Catanzaro. Check how you will get there and where you will park before you set out.

8. Baia dell'Ippocampo, Soverato

Listed as a bay, which is how locals will give directions. Ask your host or the nearest beach establishment for the best access point.

9. Le Castella, Isola di Capo Rizzuto

The name Le Castella is the one on the list. The municipality is Isola di Capo Rizzuto, so use both names when you search for directions.

10. Punta Alice, Cirò Marina

A headland name in the list for Cirò Marina. Confirm the exact stretch on site, since a flag covers only the section it names.

11. Lido, Roccella Jonica

Listed simply as Lido. In Roccella Jonica this is the flagged stretch. Do not assume the whole waterfront has the same award.

12. Lungomare Zaleuco, Locri

Locri is one of the four municipalities new to the list in 2026. The listed section is named after the seafront promenade.

What the numbers behind the beaches mean

A flag is a good sign for the section it names. It is not a daily clearance. Local notices on site always take priority over anything printed here.

Beyond the list: the bays of Capo Vaticano

The Costa degli Dei runs from Capo Vaticano in the municipality of Ricadi to Tropea on the Tyrrhenian coast. Its best-known bays are Grotticelle, Praia i Focu and Santa Maria. Tourism sources describe them with their own entries. They are not part of the 12 sections selected above, so check the signs for their flag status.

Grotticelle is described as a run of three sandy beaches in a row. Some bays on this coast are reachable only by boat or by very narrow paths. A boat trip from Tropea harbor is the simplest way to see several of them in one go. Read the details on the Capo Vaticano page and compare boat trips on the tours page.

Swimming in Reggio Calabria

Reggio has a long seafront promenade, and it is tempting to swim after a museum visit. Do not do that without checking. The city's notice for the 2026 season classes several stretches as poor and bans swimming there, among them Gallico-Limoneto, Villa Zerbi and Pellaro-Lume. The ban order and the season order were both issued on 22 June 2026.

Treat the promenade as a place to walk. For the museum and the Riace Bronzes, see the Reggio Calabria page.

Planning a beach trip

Pick a base first. Where to stay compares the main areas, and the weather page explains the climate. If you arrive by air, the Lamezia Terme airport page shows how to reach the coast without a car.
