Tropea in a nutshell
Tropea is a town on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. The old upper town stands on a rock above the marina, and the beach lies below it. The sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola, on a rock beside the beach, is the town's best-known sight. Boat trips along the Costa degli Dei leave from its harbor, and Capo Vaticano lies on the same stretch of coast.
This is an independent guide, with no link to the municipality or to the sanctuary. Prices and hours are the ones published for 2026 at the time of writing, so check them again before you go.

Tropea beach
The beach lies under the cliffs and the old town. The Blue Flag list for 2026 names three sections for Tropea: Marina del Convento, Marina dell'Isola and Rocca Nettuno. Neighboring Parghelia has the Michelino section on the same list. The award refers to those named stretches, not to every shoreline of the municipality, and it is not a daily clearance for swimming. Read the notices on site.
In summer 2026 a local bus service called Bus per il Mare linked the upper town, the harbor and the beaches. It started on 13 July, with stops at Piazza Cannone, the harbor, Le Roccette and Madonna dell'Isola. A single ticket cost €1.50, a day ticket €4.50, a week €12 and a month €41. The prices were guaranteed only until 1 August 2026, and a service in October is not announced, so do not count on it.
The old town
The upper town stands on a rock above the marina. Its main street is the Corso Vittorio Emanuele. From the edge of the old town you can look out over the coast, and narrow lanes lead off the main street. Churches and museums set their own hours.
For a guided look, a walking tour of about 2.5 hours is offered, in Italian, English or German, with museum tickets not included.

Getting to Tropea and parking
By train from Lamezia Terme, or by car along the coast.
From the airport
There is no train at Lamezia Terme Airport. Take the bus to Lamezia Terme Centrale, then a regional train on the coastal line. The bus costs €1.80 on top of the train fare. Check the current timetable before you go.
Lamezia Terme Airport →An example train
The regional train 5486 leaves Tropea at 8:15 pm, reaches Pizzo at 8:53 pm and Lamezia Terme Centrale at 9:17 pm, which is 38 and 62 minutes. It is in the timetable valid to 12 December 2026 and does not run on public holidays.
Summer extras
The added weekend night trains via Tropea ended on 6 September 2026. Do not count on the summer night trains in October.
Parking in the town
The municipality announced the suspension of its new parking regulation and parking plan until 21 October 2026, after a court ruling. That does not mean parking is free, and it does not tell you what applies afterwards. Read the signs when you arrive.

The red onion of Tropea
Cipolla Rossa di Tropea Calabria is an IGP product, registered in the EU by Regulation 284/2008 of 27 March 2008. The product description gives a red outer skin, a white interior and a sweet taste. The production zone covers communes in the provinces of Cosenza, Catanzaro and Vibo Valentia, not only the town of Tropea.
According to that description, the harvest runs from mid-April to the end of July, depending on the type, so do not expect fresh onions all year. More on local dishes is on the page about Calabrian food.
Day trips from Tropea
Most nearby sights are within reach by boat or by train.

Capo Vaticano
Sandy bays and a viewpoint, reached by boat or by road.

Pizzo
The castle, the rock church and the tartufo, on the same coastal line.

Where to stay

Boat day trips to the Aeolian Islands, including Stromboli, also leave from Tropea. They take most of a day, so they suit a day with calm weather.
