Where to Stay in Calabria

Calabria is a long region, and the base you choose decides what you can do on foot. This guide compares the main areas by location, with sights, transport and practical limits, so you can pick one before you look at rooms.

Choose the area before the room

Calabria's best-known places sit on the Tyrrhenian coast: Tropea, the coves of Capo Vaticano in the municipality of Ricadi, Scilla and Pizzo. Reggio Calabria is a city on the Strait of Messina, and the Sila is a mountain plateau inland. They are different kinds of trip. A beach week, a museum weekend and a lake and forest stay do not share a base.

This page compares the areas by what is nearby and what to check. It does not rate single hotels and gives no room prices. Which area is best for you is an editorial choice based on the facts below, not an official classification.

A sandy bay on the coast of Capo Vaticano

Tropea and Capo Vaticano

Tropea has an old town on a rock above the marina. It is the base for the sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola, the harbor and the beaches Marina dell'Isola, Marina del Convento and Rocca Nettuno, which carry the Blue Flag in 2026. Boat trips along the coast to Capo Vaticano leave from the harbor and take about 3 hours.

In summer 2026 a local bus connected the upper town, the harbor and the beaches, starting on 13 July. That bus is a seasonal service, so ask whether it runs in your month. A hotel “near the beach” can still mean a climb, because the old town sits above the shore.

Capo Vaticano, in the municipality of Ricadi, offers coves and a panorama path at around 100 m above the sea, with a natural terrace by the lighthouse. Grotticelle is a run of 3 connected sand beaches. Some bays are reachable only by boat or by very narrow paths, so ask your host how guests get down. Free parking and access to private beach areas are not something to assume.

Scilla, Pizzo and Reggio Calabria

Three bases with very different surroundings.

Scilla

Castello Ruffo stands on the headland between Marina Grande and Chianalea. Entry costs €3 in 2026, and it is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9–13:40 and 15–20. Chianalea is the fishing quarter, with houses on the rocks and narrow lanes down to the sea. Ask your host about stairs, street noise and how you reach the door.

Pizzo

The Piedigrotta church, carved into the rock, lies next to the beach on the SS 522 at Via Riviera Prangi. Castello Murat is in the town. A room near Piedigrotta is not the same as a room in the old town, so check where the address sits. Tropea is about 38 minutes away on one timetable example.

Pizzo →

Reggio Calabria

The National Archaeological Museum with the Riace Bronzes is at Piazza De Nava 26 and costs €10 for adults in 2026. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9–20, and closed on Monday. The Lungomare Falcomatà runs for about 1.7 km. Liberty Lines plans a passenger crossing to Messina of 35 minutes. Several coastal stretches have bathing bans in 2026, so do not pick Reggio for a swimming holiday.

The Sila: a different kind of stay

The Sila is a plateau, not a beach destination. The national park describes large plains above 1,300 m on average, three large reservoirs (Cecita, Arvo and Ampollino) and wide pine and beech forests. Summer rental of sailboats and canoes is offered on the lakes, which is not a permission to swim.

The climate is cool-temperate, so pack for mountain weather. The Giganti della Sila forest has been closed to visits since 24 July 2026, after trees fell, and no reopening date is announced. Do not choose a base in Camigliatello or Lorica for that forest. The Cupone environmental education center on Lake Cecita has nature trails, wildlife observation and a picnic area by the lake.

Which base fits your trip

A short guide by travel plan.

Beaches and boat trips

Choose Tropea or the Capo Vaticano coast. Tropea has the harbor and the old town, and Capo Vaticano has the coves.

Sights without a car

Tropea and Pizzo are both on the coastal railway line, and Reggio Calabria has its museum near a station. See the airport page for how the bus and train link works from Lamezia Terme.

Museum and city

Choose Reggio Calabria for the museum, the promenade and the ferry to Messina.

Lakes and forest

Choose the Sila, and read the weather page for how its climate differs from the coast.

Where to stay in Calabria: frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Calabria?

It depends on the trip. Tropea or the Capo Vaticano coast suit beaches and boat trips, Reggio Calabria suits a museum visit, and the Sila suits lakes and forest. This is an editorial choice, not an official ranking.

Should I stay in Tropea or Capo Vaticano?

Tropea has an old town, a harbor and the sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola. Capo Vaticano, in Ricadi, has coves and a lighthouse panorama. Ask your host how you reach the beach from your room.

Is Reggio Calabria a good base for swimming?

Not as a general rule. The city issued bathing bans for several stretches for the 2026 season. Reggio suits the museum, the promenade and the ferry to Messina.

Can I visit the Giganti della Sila from the Sila?

No. The forest has been closed to visits since 24 July 2026. Choose a Sila base for the lakes and the plateau instead.

Does the Tropea beach bus run all year?

No. The Bus per il Mare was announced as a summer service from 13 July 2026, and its fares were guaranteed only until 1 August. Ask your host what is available in your month.
